Biography

Dr. Raju Thomas is Professor and Residency Program Director in the Department of Urology at Tulane University School of Medicine. He served as Chair of the Department of Urology from 1994 to 2025. He earned his medical degree from Seth G.S. Medical College at the University of Bombay in India (1974), completed his general surgery residency at the University of Illinois in Chicago (1977), and went on to complete a fellowship at the Tulane Primate Center co-sponsored by the American Urological Association and the National Kidney Foundation (1979–1980). He completed his urology residency at Tulane University School of Medicine in 1982 and received board certification from the American Board of Urology in 1984.

Dr. Thomas specializes in minimally invasive urologic surgery, including endourology, robotics, laparoscopy, lithotripsy, and prostate disease. He has pioneered and refined numerous endoscopic and surgical techniques, including ureteroscopic retrograde endopyelotomy and urologic laparoscopy, and has promoted radical perineal prostatectomy in combination with laparoscopy as a minimally morbid option for the management of prostate cancer. His expertise has made him a sought-after faculty member for advanced continuing medical education programs throughout the United States and internationally. He also serves as Medical Director of the Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) Training Program and the Urologic Cryosurgery Training Program.

An author of over 190 scientific publications, abstracts, and book chapters, Dr. Thomas is a member of numerous national and international scientific societies and serves as a peer reviewer for several urologic journals. He has been consistently recognized in Best Doctors in America and Best Doctors in New Orleans. In 2021, he received the Spirit of Charity Award from The Spirit of Charity Foundation in New Orleans in recognition of his commitment to caring for underserved populations. His career highlights include President-Elect of the Endourological Society, Past President of the American Urological Association (AUA, 2021–2022), the AUA Distinguished Service Award (2016), Past President of the World Congress of Endourology & SWL (2013), and Past President of the Southeastern Section of the AUA (2010). Above all, he considers his greatest achievement to be helping rebuild Tulane's Department of Urology following Hurricane Katrina (2005).
