Tulane Center for Clinical Neurosciences seeks nominees for Alzheimer's award

The Tulane Center for Clinical Neurosciences is currently accepting nominations for the Gwynn Akin Bowers Neurology Chair's Award. This prestigious award serves as a beacon of recognition and support for exceptional individuals at Tulane University School of Medicine who, in the past year, have contributed to Alzheimer's disease research, Alzheimer's education, or community outreach for patients with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (e.g., vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia), or their caregivers. 

 

  • This year, the award will be given to one person. There will be recognition given to that person for their achievements, as well as a $2,000 cash award paid to that individual.

 

  • Eligibility: Nominations are invited for individuals (Faculty, Staff, and students) who have demonstrated exceptional accomplishments, leadership, and impact in the field of Alzheimer's disease or related dementias. Nominees should possess a strong commitment to advancing the understanding, treatment, and care for these neurological disorders.

 

  • Nomination Process: Nominations can be submitted by colleagues, mentors, professional organizations, or individuals familiar with the nominee's work. Self-nominations for the award will also be accepted.

 

  • Supporting Documents: Please provide a 500-word or less statement on why the nominee is qualified to receive the award. This should be submitted via email to crigby@tulane.edu. Each nomination should include a detailed justification highlighting the nominee's achievements, leadership qualities, significant contributions, and potential for future impact. Please also include a copy of the nominee’s CV. Please ensure that all documents are clearly labeled and organized for ease of review.

 

  • Deadline: The deadline for nominations is April 23, 2025. Nominations received after this date will not be considered for the current award cycle.

More about Dr. Akin Bowers:

Gwynn Collins Akin Bowers has over thirty years of experience in health and science policy and planning. Her distinguished service includes faculty, administrative, and board positions at numerous universities, advisory committees for the National Institutes of Health, and consulting for the National Science Board. Highlights of her remarkable career include lending her expertise to the Association of Academic Health Centers as a senior professional associate and acting as staff director of the National Science Board's Twelfth Report to the President and Congress of the United States.

Akin flourished in her advisory roles, even as she advanced to vice president for public policy at Syntex Corporation, a multi-national life science corporation focusing on human pharmaceuticals. Through her service on pharmaceutical industry committees and the National Association for Biomedical Research Boards, National Leadership Coalition on AIDS, Hastings Center's Western Advisory Council, and the respected publication Health Affairs, Akin has had a significant and lasting impact on the medical community.

Dr. Akin earned her doctorate in Anatomy from Tulane University in 1965. She has served her alma mater as a Tulane University School of Medicine Dean's Advisory Council member and generously supported the medical school. In 2007, the Dr. Gwynn Collins Akin Bowers Auditorium in the School of Medicine was named in her honor. The state-of-the-art auditorium features advanced technical capabilities for health sciences lectures and presentations, and community-wide events and functions. In 2008, she was inducted into the prestigious Paul Tulane Society.
