Luis A Balart, MD, MACG (1948-2019) was a Professor of Medicine, Chief of Section Gastroenterology & Hepatology, and Director of Gastroenterology & Hepatology Research at Tulane. Among his roles, he served as Principal Investigator for a vast number of clinical trials in gastroenterology and liver disease, the latter notably contributing to the development and FDA approval of direct antiviral agent (DAA) therapies to treat chronic hepatitis C. The current clinical trial unit at Tulane is indebted to the contributions and service he provided to his patients, students, resident/fellows that he touched during his illustrious career.
