Melasma is a common acquired disorder characterized by symmetric, dark (hyperpigmented) patches with an irregular outline, occurring most commonly on the face. The disorder is most prevalent among young to middle-aged women who are Hispanic or of Asian, African or Middle Eastern descent (i.e. those with more darkly pigmented skin). Factors that make melasma worse include pregnancy, use of oral contraceptives. Some medications, prescription and over the counter, may cause melasma in prone individuals.
Melasma occurs most frequently in women and is almost always in areas exposed to sun.
Melasma is difficult to treat, but the most effective prevention is adequate use of sunscreens and sunblocks. Once melasma occurs, there are a number of treatment options which can help remove or decrease pigment including:
- sunscreens
- bleaching agents
- chemical peels
- lasers
