Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. The most common types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Melanoma accounts for less than 5% of all skin cancer, but is the most deadly form of skin cancer, because it can spread to other parts of the body.
All types of skin cancer can be easily treated when detected early. People of all skin types should perform monthly skin exams to look for any new, changing, growing spots, especially spots that bleed or do not heal. Suspicious spots should be evaluated by a board certified dermatologist to evaluate for cancer. Patients can also participate in free skin cancer screenings performed by members of the American Academy of Dermatology members.
