Career Development - Family & Community Medicine

What Does Training Look Like?

Family medicine residency training is typically three years and offers broad, hands-on experience caring for patients across the lifespan. Residents rotate through outpatient clinics, inpatient medicine wards, emergency departments, labor and delivery units, and long-term care settings. They develop robust skills in preventive care, acute and chronic disease management, behavioral health, and commonly performed office procedures.

At the core of family medicine residency is the continuity clinic. Here, residents manage their own panel of patients and learn the essence of whole-person, relationship-centered care. Over time, they become trusted partners in their patients’ health, often caring for multiple generations within the same family.

Subspecialties

Students pursuing family medicine are committed to careers as comprehensive primary care physicians. However, some choose to pursue advanced training through certificates of added qualification (CAQs) or other fellowships.

ABFM-Recognized Certificates of Added Qualification (CAQs):

  • Adolescent Medicine
  • Geriatric Medicine
  • Healthcare Administration, Leadership, and Management
  • Hospice and Palliative Medicine
  • Pain Medicine
  • Sleep Medicine
  • Sports Medicine

Additional Fellowships:

  • Addiction Medicine
  • Behavioral Medicine
  • Brain Injury Medicine
  • Clinical Informatics
  • Emergency Medical Services
  • Faculty Development
  • Global Health
  • Health Policy
  • Integrative Medicine
  • Medical Education
  • Preventive Medicine/Public Health
  • Rural and Underserved Medicine
  • Women’s Health / Surgical Obstetrics

These diverse opportunities reflect the versatility of family medicine, and the leadership roles family physicians can assume across healthcare systems.

What Does a Typical Workday Look Like?

No two days are the same—and that’s the beauty of it. A family physician might start their day in clinic seeing newborns, adolescents, and older adults; perform procedures such as joint injections or skin biopsies; and later mentor students or residents. Many also provide inpatient care, attend deliveries, or make home and nursing home visits. This variety makes the work both stimulating and deeply meaningful. There is truly never a dull moment in family medicine.

Important Qualities and Traits

The most effective family physicians share the following traits:

  • Empathetic and intellectually curious
  • Strong communicators
  • Adaptable and collaborative
  • Committed to patient-centered, holistic care
  • Lifelong learners
  • Community-minded team leaders

A dedication to equity, service, and relationship-building defines excellence in our field.

Shadowing Opportunities

Medical students interested in shadowing or research in family medicine should contact Adam Peltz, Senior Program Coordinator, in the Department of Family Medicine.

Research Opportunities

Medical students interested in shadowing or research in family medicine should contact Adam Peltz, Senior Program Coordinator, in the Department of Family Medicine.

Additionally, students may want to pursue research opportunities through the DeBakey Scholars Program. This program offers medical students the opportunity to pursue and complete a longitudinal, structured, closely supervised research experience culminating in a capstone presentation prior to graduation. For more information, contact Dr. Derek Pociask.

Specialty Interest Group

The Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) is open to all Tulane medical students and offers a great introduction to the specialty through workshops, panels, mentorship, and service opportunities.

Additionally, students are encouraged to join the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) at no cost. Membership provides access to a vibrant national community and a wide range of resources to support you throughout medical school, residency applications, and your early career.

Who are the Specialty Academic/Career Advisors for this Specialty?

Primary Faculty Advisor: Rade N. Pejic, MD

For general inquiries or support with scheduling, students may also contact Adam Peltz, Senior Program Coordinator.

Recommended T3 & T4 Coursework

The third-year family medicine clerkship can be scheduled at any point, though mid-to-late third year is often optimal.

Fourth-year coursework should be tailored to address each student’s learning needs and residency goals. Students should consult with department leadership to select electives that both reinforce clinical knowledge and showcase commitment to the specialty during residency applications.

Important Advice

Follow your passion for people. Choose family medicine if you are inspired by the opportunity to build long-term relationships, care for entire families, and lead change in communities. Family medicine offers unmatched flexibility, personal meaning, and professional growth.

A great way to explore the specialty further and connect with residency programs across the country is by attending the AAFP National Conference (FUTURE Conference). It’s an inspiring event and a key opportunity to network and find your place within the family medicine community.
