Career Development - Family & Community Medicine

What Does Training Look Like?

Residency in Family Medicine is three or four years. There are multiple fellowships available after residency, including but not limited to: Addiction medicine,  Geriatric medicine, Integrative medicine, Sports medicine, OB, Global health, Hospitalist, Pallative care, and Rural medicine. Residents may train in opposed or unopposed programs in academic, academic-affiliated and/or community based programs.

Subspecialties

Sub-specialties include addiction medicine,  geriatric medicine, integrative medicine, sports medicine, OB, global health, hospitalist, pallative care, and rural medicine.

What Does a Typical Workday Look Like?

This varies depending on the scope of care of the provider. Full spectrum family physicians may start their day by rounding in the hospital, seeing their patients at 7 am, then going to clinic after rounds until around 5 pm. They may take OB and hospital calls overnight and on weekends. Other family physicians focus only on outpatient clinic and may work from 8-5.

Important Qualities and Traits

Qualities recognized as important to family medicine include:

  • Interest in continuity of care
  • Forming relationships with patients & families over time
  • Ability to work with the intellectual challenges which arise within broad differential diagnoses
  • Interest in working with chronic care management and preventative medicine
  • Desire for a dynamic workday in an outpatient setting

Shadowing Opportunities

Students can contact Adam Peltz for shadowing opportunities.

Research Opportunities

Contact Dr. Tebbe for information about current opportunities to get involved with research.

Additionally, students may want to pursue research opportunities through the DeBakey Scholars Program. This program offers medical students the opportunity to pursue and complete a longitudinal, structured, closely supervised research experience culminating in a capstone presentation prior to graduation. For more information, contact Dr. Derek Pociask.

Specialty Interest Group

The Family & Community Medicine (FCMIG) Interest group is open to all Tulane Medical students considering a primary care path.

Who are the Specialty Academic/Career Advisors for this Specialty?

Dr. James Tebbe

Students may also seek out other faculty, if they choose. Additionally, you may contact Adam Peltz, Senior Program Coordinator, for more information.

Recommended T3 & T4 Coursework

Clerkship in Family Medicine can be taken at any time, but the middle to end of the third year is optimal.

Important Advice

Doing an away rotation is a great opportunity to learn more about a residency program and for both parties to decide if they are a good fit.

Highlight why you are interested in family medicine and any extra-curricular activities which demonstrate your interest in primary care and community medicine when applying.

A great way to network and get to know more about a program’s “feel,” personnel, curricula and opportunities is to attend the annual conference of the AAFP.
